Four vehicles and various tools were taken Sunday night from Kihei Auto Sales, which put out a call via social media to help apprehend the suspects and locate the stolen items.
“We got a pretty good idea of who they are. We got a lot of names,” General Manger Javin Nielsen said Tuesday of the suspects, who were caught on security footage.
Up to three individuals may have been responsible, he said, adding the estimated total of items stolen is around $80,000.
Kihei Auto Sales is also offering a reward of $2,500 for information leading to the recovery of the stolen vehicles and tools.
Maui police said Tuesday that between 4 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday, the suspects entered the property of Kihei Auto Sales/South Maui Motors and broke into one of the buildings and stole several items, including the keys to four vehicles and the vehicles themselves. Police are investigating the case.
Nielsen said the burglary was discovered on Monday morning. There were tire marks and the cabinets of the business were open, Nielsen said.
The business also puts a car at its entrance when closed so no vehicles can get in or out, Nielsen said. But the suspects brought straps so they could pull the car out of the way and make off with the stolen vehicles.
Nielsen said that seven vehicles were once stolen from the lot but that it hasn’t happened for awhile. He added that they have called to have their security upgraded, but the person has been busy and they have waited two months.
The stolen vehicles include a 2019 dark gray Nissan Rogue, license plate TSF 484; a 2016 silver Nissan Altima, license plate CNY-BOI; a 2005 white Nissan Titan, license plate MMR 511; and a 2016 red Ford Escape, license plate LGC 768. Other stolen items include buffers, vacuums and a variety of Snap-on tools.
Anyone with information may contact the Maui Police Department at (808) 244-6400 or Kihei Auto Sales at (808) 875-8782.
