The 2023 Met Galahonored Karl Lagerfeld, a divisive fashion powerhouse whose career spanned decades and haute couture ateliers. Known just as well for his signature style as the powerful impact he left on fashion houses such as Chanel and Fendi, Lagerfeld was an icon of the industry, and guests at this year's Met Gala showed up and showed out to honor his memory and legacy.
Some stars, like Cardi B, opted to embody Lagerfeld himself, donning looks inspired by his signature color palette and necktie. Others, like Naomi Campbell, Olivia Wilde, and Dua Lipa donned archival looks designed (or inspired) by Lagerfeld. No matter how the Met Gala attendees chose to honor the designer who left an indelible mark on the fashion world, suffice it to say that they did so in style. Ahead, see our fave Met Gala 2023 looks that honored Lagerfeld.
Cardi B
From her sleek gray hair to her necktie to her CHENPENG gown dripping in rosettes, Cardi B was all about the Lagerfeld on Monday night.
Lily Collins
We never associated a sheer train bearing the name "KARL" in glittering capital letters with high fashion until we saw Lily Collins in this custom Vera Wang look.
Jeremy Pope
Jeremey Pope's custom Balmain cape saw Lily Collin's train and said, "respectfully, hold my beer." Not only did Pope's train extend down the entire tricolor Met Gala staircase, but it also featured a full sketch of Lagerfeld's distinct profile.
Naomi Campbell
Naomi Campbell worked closely with Lagerfeld throughout her career, and chose to honor the designer by wearing an archival Chanel look from the Spring/Summer 2010 Couture collection.
Dua Lipa
Going back even further into the Chanel archives, Met Gala co-chair Dua Lipa also wore Chanel. Her full-skirted black and white ballgown is from Chanel's Fall/Winter 1992 Couture collection, and was originally worn by one of Lagerfeld's favorite models and muses, Claudia Schiffer.
Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde's Met Gala look hails from a different fashion house. Her custom Chloé gown was inspired by Lagerfeld's famous Chloé violin dress. While the original dress, designed by Lagerfeld in 1983, was shorter and black, the reference is unmistakable.
Stephanie Hsu
In another nod to the man himself, Stephanie Hsu's Valentino gown featured Lagerfeld's beloved black and white color palette as well as his signature tie.
