It's official — the square manicure is officially back. Both Taylor Swift and Meghan Markle sported the early-aughts trend in recent weeks, rocking a peach fuzz manicure and french tip nails respectively. Now, Dua Lipa is the latest celeb to rock the look. She hit the red carpet at the 2024 Grammy Awards wearing a square manicure with soft, rounded edges.
Square nails are traditionally very sharp and angular, explains Heather Reynosa, director of global education design at OPI. But rounding the edges of the nails into this squoval shape makes them look more modern and approachable.
For polish, nail artist Kim Truong kept Lipa's look simple and chic. She's wearing a shimmery, subtle, yet stunning milky jelly polish that allows the natural beauty of her nails to shine through. The end result is a natural but versatile look that works as well on the red carpet as it does in the office.
"Milky nails, also called milk bath nails, refer to a shade of nail lacquer or gel that is akin to the color and opacity of a milk bath — like Cleopatra used to take," says celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec. "They tie into the quiet luxury trend of nails being groomed with just a bit of coverage, and the Korean nail trend of a softer shade versus fully opaque."
To recreate the look, go for a milky polish like Essie's Marshmallow or Aprés Nail's Baby's Breath.
