Max has released the teaser for its upcoming documentary “Bama Rush,” which chronicles the Internet sensation that began with the sorority recruitment videos posted on YouTube by the University of Alabama students.
On May 23, the feature-length documentary will make its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming platform, which is the result of the merger of HBO Max and Discovery+.
In August of 2021, thousands of young women participated in the time-honored ritual of sorority recruiting (also known as a rush week), but the incoming students at the University of Alabama produced a wide range of TikTok videos under the hashtag “Bama Rush.”
While pledges posed for “Get Ready With Me” videos, “Fit-checks,” and updates on whether or not they advanced, active sorority members documented the process, giving an inside look at how the 19 houses get ready to welcome over 2,500 new members.
Their footage gave viewers, both new and old, a glimpse inside the weeklong grueling event, and it quickly went viral, eventually receiving over 2 billion views.
By the next summer, would-be sorority members and their supporters were ready to fully embrace the phenomena. Rachel Fleit, a documentary filmmaker, went to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, during the rush week in 2022 to follow four young women as they prepared to rush to the university.

As stated in the press announcement, “Fleit explores the emotional complexities and stakes of belonging in this crucial window into womanhood.”
