A young dad never turned up for a coaching session after he was seriously injured in a bus crash.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Liam McCracken, 22, was hit by the vehicle while running along Pilch Lane East in Huyton, Liverpool, on Tuesday afternoon.
He was stuck under the bus for an hour before being taken to Aintree Hospital with a gash in his skull, a broken nose, back, ribs and pelvis, among other injuries.
His coach and friend, Phil Turner, said the alarm was raised when he didn’t arrive for his session.
‘No one could get hold of him, he was supposed to be in [the gym] for 4pm teaching kids,’ he said. ‘He was in for a one-to-one session and he never showed up.
‘He’s the most reliable guy you will ever meet so we knew something was wrong. We started hearing about the bus crash and that’s where Liam runs a lot, so we started putting two and two together.
‘We were ringing all of the hospitals, we did The Royal and Whiston, but it was his mum who found out he was in Aintree.’
Liam had just moved in with his girlfriend and their one-year-old daughter in Old Swan, and now it is feared the couple may have to move out because their flat is ‘full of stairs’.
Phil added: ‘His mum said when he woke up he was asking if the bus driver and everyone on the bus was okay, his mum was saying, “Never mind the bus driver, how about you?”
‘He said when he was under the bus he thought if he fell asleep he was going to die, so he was awake the whole time and he kept saying his daughter’s name.
