Multiple car fires at a scrap metal facility in the Central Maui Baseyard created a black plume of smoke seen for miles Monday morning. Alarm time was at 9:42 a.m. and fire crews arrived and found a working fire within a large pile of scrap metal at Hammerhead Metals Recycling. The fire was brought under control around 1:15 p.m., fire officials said. Cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate was not yet available Monday afternoon. Engine 10, Tanker 10 and Hazmat 10 from Kahului along with Engine 14 and Ladder 14 from Wailea all responded to the fire along with a state Department of Transportation Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting crew.
